bloomSky health website design

I had previously helped upcoming health management company develop their logo. We worked well together and was later approached to design and develop the entire website. I’m very excited about this project because it is one of those rare cases where I get to dictate the entire identity/branding process. Not to be condescending or cocky, but big companies with their bureaucracy and inflexibility, through no fault of their own, kills innovation and outside of the box thinking. Have I rambled enough? Follow the link to see the first round of design and a few more screenshots. I’m currently developing the website, it will be up shortly.

Episcopal Church of Washington new website design

Written on December 31, 2009

This was designed for Episcopal Church of Washington. Episcopal Diocese of Washington is a very progressive organization both in its ideal and branding. The pattern from the logo can be extracted to create other variations. Click the link to see a few more screenshots. *I did not design the logo! I put it in there to show where the pattern’s coming from. I rarely get to work with good logo like this.

Still life Painting Febuary 2009

Written on October 7, 2009

This is the first and only (so far) painting complete in 2009. After finishing the painting i did for David just months ago, I decided that I loved that one so much, i’m going to do one for myself. I set it up similar to the original except I can’t paint cheese, so i decided to go with some fruit. This one took about a month to do, again, play movie while working on it. I think Harry Potter was a popular theme in those nights.

The good part of this painting is the use of the oil paint’s thickness to convey texture. I was a little lose with my use of paint and color. My grapes are also more refined after practice with the previous painting. The down side is again my old habit of painting too much. Some part are way too detailed than my original plan and I did not achieve the half finished look like the other one.

The painting looked alright when finished. I should not have painted the wine bottle in such detail, and should’ve refined the wine glass more. It looked thick in the end and didn’t have the crystal clear feeling i was looking for. But all in all, it was a success in its own right. I’m fairly happy with it, and its now hanging in the Houston house. Compare to my previous work… easily the most appealing painting I have ever done.

Still life – Christmas 2008

Written on October 6, 2009

I was asked to do a painting for my manager David Finney in December of 2008. It was meant to be a Christmas present for his then girlfriend and current Fiancée Amy. We worked together to come up with the idea, which was simple scene of a cutting board, and ingredient of Amy’s favorite dish. David bought the grape and cheese, and i used my own cutting board, knife, wine glass, and a recently acquired bottle of wine (from walking a neighbor’s dog) and set them up in the corner of my bedroom. I put a movie on my laptop, and painted almost every night for 2 weeks before the Holidays.

I always wanted to do a “process” painting, not sure what the proper name for it is. The painting will have very refined parts to show the artist’s ability to render objects to make them look good, but also leave other parts of the painting in various rough stages to show how the painting came to be. I have a tendency to finish painting and refine every part, so this was quite an exercise and learning experience for me. I prepared the canvas by brushing gesso over it to create an underline texture, other parts of the canvas ignored. It might have been an old canvas i had for a while, but some parts were see through, i didn’t really “see” it until well into the process. you can see from the stem of the wine glass part of the canvas was teared. This actually worked to my advantage since that part of the canvas was suppose to be shiny. It looks great when there is a light behind the canvas.

Midway through the painting, i realized it is actually one of my favorite painting i have ever done byself, so it was hard to give it up later. I don’t know how attached other artists are with their paintings, but I’m sure if they have spent as much time and given as much thought into their work as i have with this one, it will be hard to let go. I feel your pain, my fellow painters who have to sell painting for living.Another valuable lesson i learned was how to paint grapes. The trick was to get the color right and keep in might grapes are whole units. I think they turned out alright. Oh, I don’t know how to paint cheese. Noooo idea. I will try harder next time. Anyway, in the end, the wine in the glass vaporized, mold started to appear on the glass, my entire bottle of wine gone bad, the grapes were all shriveled up, and the painting was complete (at least the cheese never smelled). Needless to say, it was pretty messy business and i had to wash my sheet and cover afterwards. Like i said, it was rough handing it over at the end, never wanted to do that again.

MSTA is now MSEA! This screenshot was included in our proposal of the RFP. The idea is to create a more attractive and welcoming website that incorporates the latest web 2.0 technology to create an online community of Maryland teachers and students. This was not picked up because the MSEA staff didn’t have faith in our preferred CMS.
