Love/Hate Helvetica

Instructor: Ryan Clifford

Project: 1: Binary Typographic Poster Design

Criteria: The two posters must be conceptually dependent upon one another. They may also be physically dependent upon one another. Poster must be purely typographic. Paper may count as third color. You may only use the Typeface Helvetica for your solutions. NO other typefaces maybe used for this project. Poster must have THREE levels of hierarchy. Drawing the view in, keep them there, then reward their viewing with detailed subtlety.

Audience: Design professionals. This will be viewed by a sophisticated design audience.

Solution: After learning about the history of Helvetica and watching the movie Helvetica by Gary Hustwit. I came to the conclusion that: 1. helvetica is widely used, perhaps over used. 2. It is a beautiful typeface, which not only let to its wide usage, but its simplicity made it a design default (I am guilty of it, although it’s a bit tricky for online solutions). My posters represent these 2 ideas in poetry. Love helvetica expresses its beauty and neutrality, which is why people love it. Poster design project at MICA. This is an experimental piece for me to study adobe illustrator.

On our Sutton place Balcony

This was taken, or should i say these were taken during fall of 2007. I was going to MICA at the time and lived in Sutton place, an apartment building near the school. One day, just after a thunderous storm in the afternoon, a rainbow appeared and the sky turned orange and pink. I took some shots and put them together in photoshop.

Imjeee portfolio site 2007

Designed and developed this site in junior year of college. After “discovering” actionscript and its ability to turn a website into an interactive movie in summer of my sophomore year at MICA, I set out to work on my first flash project: my portfolio site. After many (3) previous attempt, i finally developed a decent and presentable site. It helped me land my first internship and many freelance work. You can find it here. After loading, the flash movie doesn’t seem to autoplay, I am looking into the problem, in the mean time, you can get past it by right click your mouse on the movie, and press the play button.
